Here at Hasmonean, we are committed to ensuring that our students grow as individuals who are able to make positive contributions at school and in the wider community. Social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) education is integral to our curricula and it allows our students to understand how to enhance their Jewish lives while also developing an understanding of and respect for people of other faiths and other cultures.
At Hasmonean, students, staff and parents are aware that the school’s key aim is to nurture students to become committed to and ready to live a life of ‘Torah im Derech Eretz’ (to lead a life that is rooted in Torah values and practice while respectfully interacting in and contributing to the world at large). As such, SMSC education and British Values (BV) are integral tenets of school life which help us to achieve that aim.
As a faith school, we believe it is important that our students are exposed to life in the wider community and that they have the opportunity to share their experiences with people of different faiths and none. Our students are able to do this through the various volunteering tasks that they carry out, through taking part in educational visits across London and the United Kingdom, through joint projects with partner school, through participating in sporting activities and through many other projects that take place. However, SMSC / BV is not limited to stand-alone events. It is present in all subjects as part of the taught curriculum in an effort to ensure that these key messages pervade school life and reach all students. This can be seen in the document here
be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, that inform their perspective on life and their interest in, and respect for, different peoples’ faiths, feelings and values
be confident in learning about themselves and others in the world around them
have the ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong
have an interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and an ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues
use a range of social skills in different contexts by working with students with various beliefs and ideas
participate in a variety of social settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively
learn about the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
participate fully in, and contribute positively to, life in modern Britain
understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others
understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within school, and further afield, as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain
learn about Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain
participate in, and respond positively to, artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities
explore and have respect for different faiths and cultural diversity within their local, national and global communities.
